What to see in Granada on foot from the city centre

Each of our suites is named after a corner of Granada, and almost all of them are a short walk from the palace. This is our route to see them on foot.

Cathedral, Royal Chapel and Alcaicería

About 500 metres from the palace stands Granada Cathedral, a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance. Next to it, the Royal Chapel holds the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs.

All around is the Alcaicería, the old silk market, now full of craft shops, and Plaza de Bib-Rambla, known for its flower stalls and churros. Close by is the Corral del Carbón, one of the best-preserved Nasrid inns, dating from the 14th century.

They inspired Suite Catedral and Suite Bib-Rambla.

Plaza Nueva and Carrera del Darro

A few minutes from the Cathedral you reach Plaza Nueva, one of the city’s oldest squares, at the foot of the Alhambra. From there runs the Carrera del Darro, one of Granada’s loveliest walks, alongside the river with the Alhambra above. It ends at the Paseo de los Tristes.

Plaza Nueva inspired Suite Plaza Nueva.

The Albaicín and Mirador de San Nicolás

From the Carrera del Darro, climb the cobbled lanes of the Albaicín, the Moorish quarter and UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its walled gardens and old cisterns. It is worth getting lost in its streets and passing through Plaza Larga, its heart.

At the top is the Mirador de San Nicolás, with the most famous view of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada behind it. Go at sunset, when the Alhambra glows red. If you would rather not walk up, minibus C31 goes up to the Albaicín from the “Catedral” stop on Calle Oficios.

The Sacromonte

Carry on east from the Paseo de los Tristes to the Sacromonte, the quarter of caves dug into the hillside and birthplace of the flamenco zambra. At night its caves host flamenco shows. Minibus C34 goes up from the “Catedral” stop.

It inspired Suite Sacromonte.

Puerta de Elvira

North of the centre, at the end of Calle Elvira, stands the Puerta de Elvira, the old main gate of the Nasrid medina and one of the oldest surviving gateways in Granada.

It inspired Suite Puerta Elvira.

And the Alhambra

The essential visit needs a day of its own and a ticket booked in advance. We explain everything in How to visit the Alhambra: tickets, opening hours and getting there.
